About Us

History

In 1929, a group of patriotic women in the Asheville, North Carolina, joined together in service and friendship to form the Ruth Davidson Chapter, NSDAR. Today, our membership continues to grow in number and enthusiasm. We support a wide variety of volunteer activities in our community. Our chapter is committed to honoring our country’s history and our future as we celebrate America 250 in 2026.

Our chapter’s namesake is Ruth Davidson. Legend says that in 1781, at the height of the American Revolutionary War, 16-year-old Ruth Davidson rode alone on horseback from Pleasant Gardens, North Carolina, to Ninety-Six, South Carolina. She carried a message from Major William Davidson saying that reinforcements were on the way. The British did not suspect a young female to be of military importance. Without a guide or escort, Ruth Davidson traveled over rough terrain through a sparsely settled region to become a true heroine of the American Revolution.

Chapter members participate in a grave marking for an American Revolutionary War Soldier.

Meetings

Our chapter meets every other month from August through June. A typical meeting includes social time, a guest speaker, and a business meeting. We also have special meetings and various social activities. Prospective members are welcome to join us at our meetings and social events.

We encourage anyone interested in joining DAR to attend one of our meetings to better understand the DAR organization and especially our chapter. You will learn more about our chapter by going to the What We Do webpage to read about some of the things that we do throughout the year.
